You're absolutely right. This explains in a good amount of detail why drivers are so hard to come by in Linux. If a driver doesn't work automatically in XP (which is often the case), getting the right driver and running it isn't that hard. In Linux, if it doesn't detect your hardware on initial install (which happens less but still happens), be prepared to spend hours, if not days, getting it to work.

The desktop is old news.

The new, budding UMPC market is a Linux playground. There are several new Linux players in that arena: Linpus, eeeXubuntu, and Pupeee in addition to the eeePC's Xandros. These will probably come pre-installed so that there are no harware issues and everything just works out of the box.

Apple isn't competing in that market (unless you expand it to count something like the iPhone), and MS is late to market with a cut-down version of an OS that's almost EOLed.

Check out the new version of Ubuntu coming out in 8 days!

Cute twist on the Linux can never make it argument, but you are wrong. Look at ATI and Nvidia video cards. There are installable drivers for those cards supplied by the manufacturers. Samsung provides installable drivers for their printers and scanners. These all come with easy to follow instructions. I am sure there are others. Those are simply what I own.
